Sounds like such a minor thing but I really think that contributes much to how forgettable the main plot is.Ģ) Motives of companions, NPCs, bad guy/s aren't black and white. While, yes, it is more believable to have outlandish names for a fantastical world, these names are also incredibly hard to remember because your brain doesn't even try to read them once but skips them in written dialogues (at least mine does). Two examples:ġ) the people/races/beasts/monsters in POE are - most often - not called Peter, Paul or Marie but Xrakr Aburh, Xaxa, Waliduce, Aluuama, or Mar Ibn Marakkah (not actual names in the game but you get the idea). They want the world to feel real and player decisions to feel meaningful and thus avoid all black-and-white and simplicity. So, what are the issues then? I think Obsidian Entertainment went too far with the complexity of the world. It got all ingredients to get you on and through an epic journey. I watched a YouTube recap video to remember what happened in POE 1 before starting POE 2 and I think the story, all in all, is great. I think there are some issues with how the story is told that make it more forgettable than it should be. ) I would literally don't know what I've done at work yesterday. If I didn't have tools to help with it (git, trello. I mean I do have a notoriously bad memory. For the life of me I could maybe remember at most 20 percent of what had transpired in the first title. But when I tried to remember it now I was dumbfounded.
Personally, I liked the story at the time.
They are RPG experts (Tyranny, KOTOR, POE, Fallout: New Vegas, South Park) who, I strongly assume, would pride themselves in telling great stories with their games. And that's something you would not expect of a Obsidian game. It seems to be a very common criticism about the predecessor.
At the very least, 40 hours to go.įeel free to join in if you feel like it.Ī few words about the story of the first POE: I think under every single review (of an at least somewhat popular gaming site) out there you'll find several comments saying that POE's story was boring or just didn't manage to get people hooked. Right now, I'm only 15 hours into the game.
So I intend to update this thread from time to time. Usually I just write a few sentences when I finish a game but with POE2 I'd like to share my impressions as I go along. I would like to share some of my thoughts about Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire and decided to do so in a new thread. So, to restart the POE2 thread, here are parts of my previous posts. Unfortunately though, everyone else's posts in those two threads are probably lost to the void forever. Hackerwoman anticipate that I had some backups of my posts on my harddrive. Then, the Great Purge came and deprived the world of all the interesting discussions. One a discussion about whether to play it in Realtime With Pause (RTwP) or turn-based and one about general thoughts on the game. Once upon a time there were two threads about Obsidian Entertainment's Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire in this forum.
